Majuli, in the state of Assam is the biggest river island of the world, situated on River Bramhaputra. The total area of this island district, which is also the first of its kind in the country, was once spread in an area of 1256 square kilometer, but now it has reduced to only 875 square kilometers, as the result of soil erosion. It is one of the famous travel destinations of North East India, especially during the time of the Majuli Bihu, a traditional dance festival. This island has been the cultural capital of Assam from as early as the 16th century, and is the home of people from the Missing tribe who had migrated from Arunachal Pradesh. Among the Satras, the first one was built by Sankaradeva, who is reckoned to be the father of the Neo Vaishnavism. Some of the important Satras of the area are Dakshinpath, Garamur, Auniati and Kamlabari. These count as the must visit tourism places of Assam too.

Best Time to Visit Majuli

In the summer, especially the late summer the place gets too hot and uncomfortable, and therefore not the ideal situation to travel or enjoy the scenic beauty.

Accomodation

The river island of Majuli is among the important tourism places in Assam, and especially during the festival of Raas fair, it can get crowded. Not everyone who visits Majuli stays in the island, and a number of people stay in nearby Jorhat, and commute from there. There are no luxury hotels in Majuli, but a few decent accommodations of private and governmental ownership, in which you can enjoy your stay for a few days.

There are quite a few governmental bunglows and guest houses which offer you a good holiday experience. There is the Circuit House in Garmur, which has two VIP suites along with a number of two bedded rooms.

There are a few PWD Inspection Bunglows in and around Majuli in which you can put up. Also the Satras host Guest houses for the convenience of the tourists.
