Now part of an important Hindu religious circuit tour, Nandgaon brims with numerous tales of Lord Krishna who is one of the most revered Hindu deities and is worshipped as the eighth avatar of god Vishnu. This place in Uttar Pradesh is where Lord Krishna spent his childhood with his foster father and mother, Nanda and Yashoda. After Krishna defeated demons in Gokul village, Nanda decided to move to Nandgaon to protect the young boy. Nanda Baba made their home on top of a large hill.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in Nathdwara. He was born to Devaki and King Vasudev of the Yadava clan. Devaki’s brother Kamsa was a tyrant, who had imprisoned Devaki and her husband. At her wedding, Kamsa was told by a fortune teller that Devaki’s child would kill him. In order to protect himself, he had killed six children of Devaki. However, after the birth of Lord Krishna, Vasudev decided to take him away, to a safe place.

Nandgaon is a major pilgrimage destination, owing to its close association with Lord Krishna’s life. Cherishing and celebrating the life of Lord Krishna, the village pays homage to the Hindu God through numerous temples built in the town. However, the major attraction of the town is the main temple which is built on top of Nandishwara Hill with which a legend is attached. It is believed that Lord Shiva once prayed to Lord Krishna to be allowed to watch his transcendental pastimes. After years of penances, Krishna granted Lord Shiva’s wish. Lord Shiva also wanted to be a mountain in Nandgaon, so that Gopis would step on him, leaving behind the dust from their feet. Krishna granted Lord Shiva’s wish to be the Nandishwara Hill. Every year thousands of devotees flock to the place to offer prayers to the mighty god. Part of the Braj region, festivals of Holi and Janmashtami are celebrated with great furore in the town and witnessing them offers a blend of divinity and cultural euphoria.

Best Time to Visit Nandgaon
