Jhalawar was formed in 1791 A.D. by Rajput Jhala Zalim Singh as a military cantonment and township, then known as Chaoni Umedpura, so as to stop Maratha to reach and attack Kota. At that time, the township was situated amidst a lush green forest which was home to many exotic species. In the year 1838 AD, the English ruler, disjoined Jhalawar from Kota and gave it to Jhala Madan Singh, the grandson of Jhala Zalim. The tourists attractions of Jhalawar are as interesting as the city. This delightful city town is dominated by 19th-century forts and temples like Jhalawar Fort, Gagron Fort, and Chandrabhaga temple.

Most charming and incongruous part of the city is Bhawani Natyashala, which was modeled on the grand opera house the Maharajas had seen on the European tours.
