Koodalmanikyam Temple Kerala
Surrounded by lush green trees and beautiful temple ponds, the Koodalmanikyam Temple is Kerala's one of the most well known temples, built before the 15th century. It is dedicated to Lord Bharatha or Lord Sangameswaraone, brother of Sree Rama and is said to be the only temple in India, dedicated to Lord Bharata. This temple is nothing but an architectural marvel, which belong to the ancient world with mural paintings on the walls, and four large ponds in the courtyard.
HISTORY
Some people believe that this temple belonged to the Jains (Bharatheswara saint of Jains) and with the descent of Jainism, this temple was taken over by Hindus.
HIGHLIGHTS
The temple has a remarkable gateway, which very well depicts the bygone era, this structure was made. The distinctive feature of this temple is that there is only a single deity here 'Dhanwanthara Moorthy,' (Lord Bharatha) known for his abilities to cure even fatal diseases of faithful devotees. The temple offers 'Brinhal Nivedyam' to its devotees after every prayer, which is believed to be very effective to cure stomachache.
FESTIVALS
Thriputhari (the day of feasting) on the Thiruvonam day observed in the month of Thulam (October-November) is an important occasion in the temple. It begins with cooking of the harvested rice for the first time and offering it to the deity and then distributing it to the devotees. This festival is celebrated for 11 days, while following the Vedic and Tantric rituals.
OTHER FACTS
For some people it is really strange that there is only one single deity present in the temple and even Lord Vingeswara, who is found in all temples does not find its place here. Also, Thulasi is a common offering in many temples in Kerala, so whenever it is offered, its seeds invariably sprouts in the premises. However, this has not happened in the Koodalmanikyam Temple and so, it's a mystery in itself.
