Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple Kerala
Set amidst the swaying coconut palms, the glorious abode of Lord Shree Guruvayoorappan, is so beautiful that words fall short to describe its magnificence. Located approximately 29 kms north west to the Trichur District, which is also known as the cultural capital of 'God's own country', Kerala, the Guruvayur Shree Krishna Temple reflects classic beauty in divine surrounding. Lord Krishna or the Guruvayoorappan is the chief diety of this temple, who is adorned with holy Tulasi garland and pearl necklace every morning. His idol looks nothing but a radiant representation of Lord Vishnu, who bless his devotees.
HIGHLIGHTS
Considered the Dwaraka of the south, this historic temple is shrouded in mystery from last so many years. It is believed that the temple is the creation of the Guru, the preceptor of the gods, and Vyus, God of the winds. People make an amazing range of offerings to the god and the most popular offerings include Thulabharam, in which, the devotees are weighted against bananas, sugar, jaggery, and coconuts equivalent to their weight. It is one of the most popular sacred pilgrim centres of Kerala, visited by a large number of Hindu devotees from distant cities and even abroad.
ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEMPLE
The majestic idol of the Lord Krishna in Guruvayur Temple is made from a rare stone known as Patala Anjana. The entrance to the temple is through eastern NADA, which faces the east and its gates are open early in the morning to give access to the devotees directly to the main temple area. In the outer enclosure is a 33.5 meter high gold plated flag post (Dwajasthambam) and a 7 meter high Deepasthambam (pillar of lamps), which is lighted in the evening. When lit, these lamps look truly gorgeous.
The main deity of the temple is seated in the square Sreekovil, which is the most sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Within this area, there are also the images of Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa, and Edathedathu Kavil Bhagavathy. Though, one can visit this temple at any time of the year, but Janmashtmi (Krishna's birthday) is the best time to visit this beautiful temple and seek blessings of Lord Krishna.
