The Mattupetty Dam is a storage concrete gravity dam, constructed under the Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project in the late 1940, for the purpose of water conservation and power generation. It helps many animals and birds with its constant availability and engage tourists with its splendid surroundings, found nowhere else. The still water of the dam and the nearby tea ground, makes Mattupetty an ideal tourist destination.

Just a few miles away from the dam, in a serene ambience, one can spot 'Mattupetty Lake,' which is covered in a mist of clouds. This lake is so beautiful that people forget all their problems and take pleasure in a world of peace, while sitting by the lakeside. Mattupetty is also famous for an Indo Swiss Farm Project or Livestock project, which was launched in the year 1963 as a part of the bilateral agreement between Indian and Swiss government.
This farm has hundreds of high yielding cattle, that can be seen grazing freely on the hills. Watching these cattle is a unique experience in itself, which the tourists can ever see in their life. It is because of these cattle, the Mattupetty hill station is also known as 'cattle village.
The best time to visit Mattupetty is from the month of August to May, as the weather is just perfect for any activity, that you may want to experience, particularly in these months.
