Kerala Folklore Theater and Museum Kerala
Placed in the city of Thevara in Kochi, Kerala Folklore Theatre and Museum is built in the Malabar, Cochin and Travancore style of architecture. It welcomes you with a big Kalvilakku (stone lamp). As you step inside the museum and pass the Kalvilakku, you will be greeted by elephant statues on both sides of the steps heading to the massive multi-storey traditional building. Opened in the year 2009, this architectural museum has a huge collection of wood works in Kerala and a perfect instance of Kerala ancient carpentry.
It's a must visit place that offers tourists with the rich heritage of Kerala. Constituted by George Thaliath and his wife Annie George, this museum was constructed by 62 skilled workers over a period of 7 years. It's a unique speculation to retain the magnificent folklore wealth of the state. It's an ideal attraction in Kerala that gives the knowledge and learning about God's own country. Everything which is related to the ancient art forms of Kerala is learnt here.
ARCHITECTURE AND EXHIBITS
Discussing about its architecture which is undoubtedly overwhelming while the construction materials of this elegant architected theatre and museum includes wood, roofing tiles and laterite stone. The most attractive and bewitching is the architecture of the building which is a beautiful epic to Kerala temple style, comprising elements from Cochin, Malabar, and Travancore styles.
The entrance door of the museum is embellished with a striking manichitratazhu- an ancient ornate door lock of Kerala. The first floor of the museum is named as Kalithattu, showcasing costumes of different traditional and ritual dance forms of Kerala like Theyyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Ottanthullal. The second floor namely Lotus petal is beautified with beautiful mural paintings and well-defined wooden ceiling made of 60 frames.
Masks, puppets, ornaments, wood carvings, oil lamps, antique musical instruments, sculptures made of wood, bronze, copper, etc., are few other attractions of the folklore museum which give an appealing look and bring several question in visitor's mind.
However, Kerala Folklore Museum also has different antiques exhibiting the history, cultural and tradition differences in different parts of the country.
THEATRE TIMINGS AND ENTRANCE FEE
Kerala Folklore Theatre and Museum conducts stage performances from 9:30 AM to 7 PM. The entry fee is Rs. 50 for students and Rs 100 for adults.
